Three Days of BBQ Fest, no BBQ Consumed: Part I

Most of my friends from undergrad now reside in the great city of Memphis, so this past year I finally made the trip up for BBQ Fest in May.  So for $75, I joined my buddy's team, and officially became a participant in the World BBQ Championships.  My $75 got me all the drinks I could handle from Thursday until Saturday afternoon, so basically it was the best $75 I've ever spent.  The following is my account of an amazing trip.

Thursday

The Bar-B-Q Shop

1782 Madison Avenue
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 16.5012" N, 90° 0' 6.03" W

Famous for their barbeque sandwich on Texas toast and barbecue spaghetti which was featured on the Bobby Flay show on the Food Network, the Bar-B-Q Shop is also known as the Dancing Pigs.

The Blue Monkey

The Blue Monkey
2012 Madison Ave
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 13.47" N, 89° 59' 38.9184" W

A great place to order a stiff drink and grab a table, the Blue Monkey provides a cool atmosphere and is an ideal place to do a little day drinking.

E P’s

E P Delta Kitchen & Bar
126 Beale St
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 25.1664" N, 90° 3' 13.032" W

If your girlfriend loves Justin Timberlake, EP's (Elvis Presley's) will provide her the best opportunity to get close to him as he has been known to frequent the joint when he is in town.  Why you might wonder?  The house band at EP's gets away from the classic Memphis funk sound and plays many of JT’s songs that he currently performs today…not to mention the lead singer is a JT look alike.

Silky O Sullivans

Silky's
183 Beale St
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 22.488" N, 90° 3' 7.3368" W

Silky’s is a great bar to post up on and is a favorite of all college aged kids.  With the dueling pianos inside and the funk band outside, Silky's provides a great atmosphere to order up their special bucket concoction called a diver and see how fast you and your group can take it down.

Rum Boogie Café

Rum Boogie Café
182 Beale St
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 22.5312" N, 90° 3' 7.4916" W

Eat.  Drink.  Boogie.  Repeat.  The Rum Boogie Café, without question, has the greatest funk band on Beale.  James Govan and the Boogie Blues Band has been performing every night at the RBC for over a decade, and will not disappoint if you want to hear the sounds of Otis Day, Sam and Dave, and Booker T and the MGs.

Earnestine and Hazel’s

Earnestine and Hazel’s
531 S Main St
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 7' 58.6776" N, 90° 3' 33.4332" W

Unquestionably the best Memphis-style juke box in town, E & H is an awesome spot to go grab a few beers, play some pool, and drop some quarters in the sound machine.  Historically an old brothel, you can cruise upstairs of E & H and see all of the old rooms that now provide perfect little nooks for bar-goers to slip into and enjoy a cold cocktail.

Raifords

Raiford's/Hollywood Disco
115 Vance Ave
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 12.4044" N, 90° 3' 23.724" W

For a college student, mark Raiford's down as your late night party bar, and make sure you make it there as there truly is no place like it.  White leather couches, smoke machines, and forty ounce’s of cold beer will keep you busy as Raiford himself rocks out all of the best rap and dance music that you know.  Raifords is also known as Hollywood Disco and has been rated as the number 1 spot in Memphis for dancing, pickups and c

B B Kings

B. B. King
143 Beale St
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 23.658" N, 90° 3' 11.6964" W

Probably the most famous blues joint on Beale, the B B King’s house band puts on a great show every night playing famous R & B tunes that were recorded not five miles from Beale at Stax Records Studio

Central Barbecue

2249 Central Ave
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 7' 32.2284" N, 89° 59' 13.2504" W

A newer restaurant started by a couple University of Memphis graduates, Central Barbecue offers a cool/young atmosphere while you wait for your grub.  All of their food is awesome.  They have great sandwiches, barbecue nachos, and incredible dry ribs, but make sure you don’t leave without trying their smoked hot wings covered in dry rub.

Blues City Café

138 Beale St
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 23.9388" N, 90° 3' 12.7368" W

This is a late-nighters dream.  Located on the north end of Beale, you can party all night long and then stumble in for some classic Memphis ribs, fried chicken, catfish, or basically anything else Blue's City Café can cook up.

Three Little Pigs

5145 Quince Rd
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 5' 19.932" N, 89° 53' 25.7316" W

A very well kept local secret, this east Memphis barbecue spot is a must for the aficionado.  Located on the less travelled Quince Road, you’ll need your TomTom to find it, but once you do, look forward to sitting down and enjoying one of the best chopped barbeque pork sandwiches of your young life…and the best part is, it will cost you less than 4 bucks.

Rendezvous

52 S 2nd St
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 36.1212" N, 90° 3' 6.5628" W

This is no doubt Rendevous the most famous barbecue place in town.  Anyone and everyone that visits Memphis hits up this old downtown alley restaurant, and you will see why once you step inside.  They claim the coldest pitchers of beer and the best dry rub ribs in town and they are right.

Bigfoot Lodge

97 S 2nd St
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 32.8452" N, 90° 3' 10.116" W

The Bigfoot Lodge is home to the Sasquatch Burger which is a four pound behemoth of a meal that is free if you can take it down in one hour.  This downtown restaurant provides a hunting lodge type atmosphere and a solid Americana menu.

Belmont Grill

4970 Poplar Ave
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 6' 48.6072" N, 89° 53' 46.8024" W

If you head out east from downtown, you should swing by the Belmont Grill.  The Belmont has been a staple in Memphis for decades providing east Memphians with great grub and a laid back atmosphere to grab cocktails before heading out on the town.  Located on the corner of Poplar and Mendenhall, the Belmont is the perfect place to pre-game.

Arcade

540 S Main St
memphis, TN
United States
35° 7' 57.2592" N, 90° 3' 31.0068" W

Memphis' oldest cafe (1919) and on the National Register of Historic Places. This 3rd generation family-owned restaurant is located in the South Main Arts District on the trolley line, and serves up some of the best soul food you can find in the city.  Their fried chicken and mashed potatoes are insanely awesome.

Earnestine and Hazel’s

531 S Main St
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 7' 58.6776" N, 90° 3' 33.4332" W

While some people know it as a funky dive bar on the south end of main, E & H truly is one of the best kept local secrets as far as an amazing tasting cheap burger.  Yep, that’s all they serve, but the way Wimpy (the cook since he was 15) prepares this Soul Burger, you are sure to be back there next time you are in Memphis.  I never bring a friend to Memphis without hitting up E & H for a burger.

Flying Fish

105 S 2nd St
memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 31.326" N, 90° 3' 9.6948" W

The Flying Fish has incredible grub for a more-than-reasonable price.  It is the perfect place to go grab a bucket of beer, a dozen oysters, and some fried catfish with a group of friends.  Also, don’t forget to try the fried shrimp as they are the best in town.  Simply a cool downtown atmosphere with awesome food.

Huey’s

77 S 2nd St
memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 34.0584" N, 90° 3' 8.5428" W

There are a couple Huey’s locations around town, but you get the same great thing at each of these Memphis originals.  Most famous for their “Huey Burger”, I also personally love their bloody marys and the fact that you are encouraged to write on the walls and shoot toothpicks into the ceiling tiles using your drink straw as your rifle.

Memphis in May!!

When considering a trip to Memphis, you have to think about the month of May, as this is when Memphis opens its arms to visitors from all over the world for Memphis in May International Festival.  Memphis in May is a full month of events that include a music festival, the Sunset Symphony, and most importantly, the World Championship Barbecue cook off.

This is a very unique hotel in Memphis, but also can be pricey.  Nonetheless, it is a Memphis original and has a great bar in the lobby.  If you are staying downtown, you should give them a call and see if you can get a discounted rate.  It will be worth it.

Peabody Hotel

Peabody Hotel
149 Union Avenue
Memphis, TN
United States
35° 8' 30.8328" N, 90° 3' 7.2792" W

The oldest and most famous hotel in Memphis, this might not perfectly fit the student budget, but would be a solid place to take a formal date or a special weekend get a way.  Even if you decide not to stay in the Peabody, stopping by and cruising the lobby is a must as you never know what famous faces you might see.

Grizzlies Basketball

Aside from the attractions on Beale Street, Memphis also has its very own NBA basketball team, the Memphis Grizzlies.  While the Grizzlies have yet to post back-to-back playoff appearances, their recent acquiring of flashy first round draft choice O.J. Mayo will improve the squad that plays to packed crowds in the city’s brand new top notch facility, the FedEx Forum.

Red Birds Baseball

If you end up in Memphis during the summer, you should try and catch a Red Birds game at Auto Zone Park.  Regardless if you love baseball or know anything about the minor leagues, this stadium was built in 1999 as a revitalization tactic for downtown.  Therefore, the food, beverage, and service in this minor league stadium are of big league quality.  Not to mention, you can enjoy some of the best barbecue nachos

Dining in Memphis: Where the Locals Eat

If you’re looking for the best places to eat in Memphis, you might need a little help from a local. From burgers to barbecue, gumbo to cheesecake, there’s something for whatever hunger you’ve got. “Ask the locals.”

A Trip to Memphis is More Than a Tour of Elvis’ House

A curled lip, swiveling hips, greased hair and a white diamante studded jumpsuit; these are the images conjured when one thinks of Memphis.  But a trip to Memphis doesn’t have to revolve around worshiping of The King and the land he traversed.  There are plenty of awesome activities to keep you busy on a quick trip to Bluff City. Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my!
