Attending the The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass is truly an experience. Outside of the four majors (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and The PGA Championship) this is the most prominent and intense PGA tour event of the year. Almost all of the worlds best players will play and Tiger Woods should be present if he stays out of trouble.

Attend a Shrimp Festival

Amelia Island hosts The Shrimp Festival which includes shrimp, live music, arts and crafts, antiques and a pirate parade   In 2009, the festival is scheduled for May 1-3.  Checkout:  http://www.shrimpfestival.com/

Attend a Crawfish Festival

The Jacksonville area is home to multiple crawfish festivals.  The Woodbine Crawfish Festival is usually held during the last weekend of April in this town in southern Georgia, 40 minutes north of  the JAX airport.  The festival includes great food, arts and crafts, bluegrass music and even a parade.  Be sure to catch the crawfish-eating contest.  Checkout:  http://www.woodbinecrawfish.com

Go Kayaking

Go kayaking.  You can fish at the same time.  Or, attend the Jacksonville Kayak Fishing Classic Tournament held annually the first weekend in May.  More than 200 kayak anglers compete in a catch-photo-release format for redfish, trout and flounder.

You can also attend the King Fish Tournament which is held for two days each year in July at Sisters Creek Park on the Inter-Coastal Waterway. 

Play Golf at TPC Sawgrass

You can play the same golf course that the pros play at TPC Sawgrass since it is open to the public. See if you can stay out of the water on the 17th hole of the Stadium course.  You can also attend the THE PLAYERS Championship which includes all the top players and raises approximately $1,500,000 each year. More than 40 charities in the Jacksonville area benefit. In 2009, the practice rounds begin on Monday, May 4, with the tournament rounds on Thursday thru Sunday.

Attend the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party

Every fall, the college football game between the University of Florida Gators and the University of Georgia Bulldogs, one of the great rivalries in college football, is hosted at the Jacksonville Jaguar Alltel Stadium.  This is known to the be the world’s largest outdoor cocktail party, and by cocktails I mean hotdogs, hamburgers, bar-b-q, and beer.

If you want to see Jacksonville at its finest, you can always get a ticket to the Jaguars NFL football games at Alltel Stadium.  You’re guaranteed to see hot middle-aged women in teal and leopard tops with cutoff jean shorts…not to mention the classy mullets worn by their husbands.

    Jacksonville is home to a number of professional sports teams. The Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League compete at the major league level. The city's other sports teams are minor league. Jacksonville is also home to two universities, a four year college, and the fourth largest community college in the country. All of these institutions field sports teams. Additionally, several college sports events are held in Jacksonville annually by teams and conferences not located in the city.

    Annual Events

    One of the most popular sporting events is the annual Gate River Run, the US National Championship 15K since 1994 and largest 15K race in the country. The 13,000+ recreational runners -- some running for the first time -- are joined by a few thousand more supporters, spectators and volunteers who make this Jacksonville's largest participation sporting event.

    The Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, an annual event in early March, is one of the nation's premier automotive concours events. Also in March is the Blessing of the Fleet and the Great Atlantic Seafood and Music Festival.

    The Jacksonville Jazz Festival is held every April and is the second-largest jazz festival in the nation. Springing the Blues is a free outdoor blues festival held in Jacksonville Beach, also in April.

    The Jacksonville Film Festival is staged every May and features a variety of independent filmsJacksonville on 4th of July, documentaries, and shorts screening at seven historic venues in the city. Past attendees of the festival have included director John Landis and Academy Award nominee Bill Murray and winner Graham Greene, both of whom were awarded the Tortuga Verde Lifetime Achievement Award.

    The World of Nations Celebration is also in May. The Spring Music Fest is a free concert Memorial Day weekend that is sponsored by the city that features some of today's most popular artists.

    The AT&T Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament is an annual event held in July. The first contest was held in 1981 and it has grown to be the largest Kingfish tournament in the United States. Participation is limited to 1,000 boats that compete for over $500,000 in prizes, attracting approximately 30,000 spectators.

 SAE Boxing tourney is one of the oldest and largest fraternity events in the country.

The three day event attracts 3,000+ students from all over the south east. It has been going on annually for the last 28 years occurring in the last week of February or the first couple weeks of March. In 2012, SAE Boxing Tournament is March 8th, 9th, and 10th.  The tickets are $15 a night or $35 for the 3 nights and the proceeds normally raise over $70,000 for charity.

The Double Decker Arts Festival is definitely the most exiting weekend at Ole Miss in the spring. “Taking its name from the town's authentic double decker bus imported from England in 1994, the festival brings together visitors and residents alike for a daylong celebration of music, food, and the arts held on the picturesque Courthouse Square of Oxford Mississippi.” Double Decker has been known to draw more than 50,000 people in attendance; making it another Mississippi spring day that you cannot miss!

If you are a Bama fan, wish you were, or just want to head to T-Town for an awesome weekend then this is the time to go. The Crimson Tide had a great season last year as they rose back to being a top competitor at a national level.

This is the biggest event of the spring at Bama and draws fans from all over the South. It is very similar to going to a Bama game during the fall except for one major difference, everyone everywhere you look is a Bama fan.

Volapalooza is a free concert hosted at Fiji Island in Fraternity Park at The University of Tennessee. This annual event normally takes place at the end of the school year and draws about 1,000 UT students for the night of fun. In the past the All Campus Events committee has been able to bring in some pretty big bands like Ben Folds, Cake, and Dashboard Confessional.

UVA SPRINGFEST 2011 on Nameless field

UVA Springfest is one of the biggest events hosted at UVA each year. It is a huge concert held at Nameless field in late March or early April. They have had some great acts in the past like Ben Folds and Ok Go. They have not announced who they have this year yet, but continue to check back here or post it in the comments if you find out.

Vanderbilt’s Rites of Spring concert, or “Rites” as VU students like to call it, is an annual concert series hosted on campus to celebrate…you guessed it…the start of spring.

It is hosted on Alumni Lawn which also plays host to Vanderbilt Graduation and other large events. It is the perfect area because it is in the center of campus and surrounded by picturesque trees. In the past, Rites has hosted big name bands creating an excuse for students to have a 3-day party instead of studying for finals.

It draws a huge crowd

Halloween is enormous in Chapel Hill. The city shuts down the main drag, Franklin Street, and people from all the surrounding towns and colleges descend upon Chapel Hill for a night of debauchery. It is a really fun time as there are often upwards of 80,000 in the streets enjoying themselves.

Every February, people around the world gather to celebrate Mardi Gras

A tradition of parades, masks, beads, dancing, and of course drinking.  With celebrations all over the world, the headquarters for this “holiday” is in New Orleans, Louisiana.  The week long  event builds in size and celebration each day before ending on Fat Tuesday (the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday).
