Things to do
Texas Football & Tailgating! - The Longhorns are always doing well so tickets are tough to come by but still possible. Check eBay and Stub Hub. If you walk to Martin Luther King Dr you can grab some tried and true Texas BBQ at one of the parking lots tailgaters have overtaken. Once inside enjoy the entertainment of the game, the great food, and lots of burnt orange.
Live Music - As the southern capitol of live music, enjoy the Austin City Limits Music Festival in September where headliners like the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Coldplay rock out at Austin’s centrally located Zilker Park or even the concerts they hold the evenings of the festival. South by SouthWest is the Springtime must-see, where Blue October and many other indie artists were discovered.
1st Thursdays of the Month - SoCo, or South Congress Street, is the place to be the first Thursday of every month as students and young professionals gather to eat, drink, and ironically shop. Just after 5 p.m. it gets packed pretty fast so parking will be difficult. Get a bike and ride down there and you will have some great views of the Capitol Building!
Barton Creek Greenbelt - This is probably one of the great treasures in Austin. Hiking in on a weekend afternoon a couple miles to Twin Falls or Sculpture Falls from one of the entry points will be well rewarded with lots of college students in inappropriate swim attire, chilling on beer, booze, and basking in the sun. Don’t take any glass or you will be asked to leave by the local Austinites and pack out what you pack in. Watch out for mountain bikers; Lance Armstrong and other professional cyclists are known to ride these trails!
Lake Austin/Travis - Rent a boat, a party barge, or a few jet skis. There won’t be a sunny day when the lakes aren’t packed with boys and girls trying to tan every inch of their skin. Find out where “Pirate’s Cove” is and you will have a day to remember.
