Las Vegas, Nevada

Tangoing with Lady Luck: My Night in the Casino

The first time I gambled with real money was on a boat from Maine to Nova Scotia. I popped in a few coins, pulled the lever, and followed the spinning cherries of the slot machine with my eyes. It was stressful and exciting. It was also illegal. Being about eight at the time, I was promptly escorted from the small casino and returned to my parents.

Golden Nugget

For $2.95, you can get more breakfast than you can eat at the Golden Nugget, near the Bellagio. It is back off the strip and is apparently open 24 hours since we went there in the wee hours several mornings and it was still kickin.

Las Vegas Dive bars

Las Vegas, NV
United States
36° 13' 58.9764" N, 115° 14' 32.2368" W

Dive bars show you a whole different side of Vegas than the hermetically-sealed neon bubble of the casinos.

I lived in Vegas for four years and went out to dive bars far more nights than I didn’t. There’s one on every corner, often three or four. From the suburbs to the University to Downtown, dive bars are plentiful in Vegas, so a top nine is truly an exclusive list.

5 Things to Expect in Las Vegas

Summary: You might be expecting a lavish getaway during your visit to Las Vegas, but the real thing might not be the desert romp you had in mind. Here’s a heads-up on what a trip to Vegas is really like. Lights! Glamour! Adventure! Rivers of cash!

Hitting the Strip on a Budget: The Best Ways to Extend your Dollar in Sin City

The Las Vegas Strip is considered expensive for most people, let alone a couple of college students, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid the area altogether.  Smart spending will give you an opportunity to experience some of the best Vegas has to offer without sending you home penniless.   Budget Tip #1 – Choose the correct hotel.

Endless Nightlife

Las Vegas, NV
United States
36° 13' 58.9764" N, 115° 14' 32.2368" W

This is what Vegas is known for and on Spring Break you can be certain that it will be Awesome. Your options for nightlife are endless, but here are some great spots that will get the conversation started. Post the rest in the comments below.

Crown and Anchor Pub- English pub that attracts a college crowd and futbol fans.

Wasted Space at the Hard Rock – The Hard Rock is famous for rock and roll and this club delivers. It has loud music and keeps the entertainment level high all night

The Big Dinner

Las Vegas, NV
United States
36° 13' 58.9764" N, 115° 14' 32.2368" W

If you’re anything like me, you’re going to want to do at least one decent dinner with your crew while you’re all in town together. This doesn’t have to be a bank breaker, but it should be at an above average restaurant, one of the many decent steakhouses in town will usually work just fine. Stay away from the ultra high end gourmet places and instead opt for one of the moderately priced steak houses found in almost every mid-level Strip resort. You’re going to have to make reservations so while you’re looking for the phone number, check the menu prices listed on the restaurant’s website.

Buffets

Las Vegas, NV
United States
36° 13' 58.9764" N, 115° 14' 32.2368" W

In addition to coffee shops, buffets are a great place to get a quality Vegas meal on the cheap. Choose wisely, however, as a bad buffet experience can do more than simply ruin a meal. Quality establishments include: Le Village Buffet at Paris, Spice Market Buffet and Planet Hollywood, Bellagio and Wynn (both real pricey – but worth it) and Cravings at The Mirage.

Coffee Shops

Las Vegas, NV
United States
36° 13' 58.9764" N, 115° 14' 32.2368" W

Coffee shops and buffets will help your food budget stay within reason while you’re in town. Most of the resorts on The Strip will have an above average coffee shop where you can get breakfast for less than $15 a person. Le Café Île St. Louis at Paris or Planet Dailies at Planet Hollywood are both good examples of quality resort coffee shops. It’s usually a good idea to do a little food research before your trip.

Downtown

Las Vegas, NV
United States
36° 13' 58.9764" N, 115° 14' 32.2368" W

Let me preface this section by saying – Downtown Las Vegas is NOT for everyone. If your ideal Vegas vacation includes sipping on a twenty-dollar Cosmo with Paris Hilton in a hot new nightclub, you are going to be miserable staying downtown. Also, if it’s your first time to Vegas, you want to be in the middle of the action and you have some money to spend, don’t worry about staying downtown. If you’re a broke college student - you shouldn’t be going on vacation, but hey, that’s never stopped you in the past.

North Strip

Las Vegas, NV
United States
36° 13' 58.9764" N, 115° 14' 32.2368" W

North Strip - Sadly, this zone has become a bit of a wasteland recently. Halted development projects and aging resorts make this area off limits for a young or first time Vegas visitor, in my opinion. Hotel casinos in this zone include: . The only one of these hotels that’s worth your time is the Las Vegas Hilton but even that choice is questionable as it’s not truly on “The Strip”, and at least a mile from the other quality resorts. Room rates in this zone are generally cheap, but again, I wouldn’t bother.

Circus Circus

Sahara, Stratosphere

Las Vegas Hilton

Riviera

Mid Strip

Las Vegas, NV
United States
36° 13' 58.9764" N, 115° 14' 32.2368" W

Mid Strip is the most popular zone in Las Vegas. Hotel room rates in this zone can be anywhere from moderately priced to disgustingly expensive, (depending on the property and the time of year) and gambling minimums can be anywhere from $10, to $100 on a crowded weekend. This is the Las Vegas you’ve come to know over the years through television and film. You are more than likely going to have to shell out a substantial chunk of cash if you want to stay at one of these swanky joints.

Planet Hollywood

Paris

Bellagio

Caesar’s Palace

Mirage

Flamingo

Venetian

South Strip

Las Vegas, NV
United States
36° 13' 58.9764" N, 115° 14' 32.2368" W

This is the second most popular “zone” in Las Vegas. Generally speaking, hotel room rates are moderate to high and gambling minimums are around 15-20 dollars for a hand of blackjack (these generalizations could fluctuate majorly depending on the time of year or days you are visiting).

Show times can vary on public holidays. Inside of the casino there is a tremendous flower garden, with displays changed every month or two. The casino also offers a fine-art gallery, although fees are charged. Bellagio is also home to one of the finest buffets on "The Strip".

Gamble

This is obviously “The” reason to go to Vegas. It is without a doubt the gambling capital of the world. There are tons of casinos at every different level of from super shady to extravagant.

Las Vegas Overview
