The World’s Greatest College Weekend – The Little 500
Bloomington, IN lives and breathes bike racing, mainly due to the Little 500, also known as “Little 5,” or more appropriately, “The World’s Greatest College Weekend.” This also hints at why the school had to request that MTV stop coming down for the event back in the day, when it started bringing too many sightseers to campus.
A lot of good that did, as it now attracts 25,000+ fans every year. The race also inspired the 1979 movie, “Breaking Away,” a classic underdog tale of the “Cutters” and campus favorite. The race is the culmination of a week of preparation and parties, and at least a school year’s worth of training on behalf of the competing teams.
Here is an awesome video showing some of the gruesome bike wrecks:
The bike race, a men’s and women’s competition of 500 and 200 laps around the track, respectively, takes place in 2010 on April 23rd and 24th. It is organized by the Indiana University Student Foundation and proceeds go towards working student scholarships. You can find more information at the Official Website.
Or by a sweet hardcover book about the event
