Taking it Easy at “The Big E” in Springfield, Massachusetts
Did someone say E? The Big E–which is hosted by the Eastern States Expo–is the largest fair in the Northeast and a hot spot for road trippers who need an early-semester road trip. The 17-day extravaganza is held annually in late September in Springfield, Massachusetts, which is a only a few hours from Boston and it’s mecca of college campuses, including Harvard, MIT, Boston College, BU, Northeastern and about 20 other schools.
The nonstop fair atmosphere at The Big E includes some of the best amusement park rides in the business, headlining entertainment, a Mardi Gras parade, and of course, plenty of weird fair standby attractions, such as a butter carving contest, hot rod exhibits and live-animal showcase called Farm-a-Rama.
The Big E opens its gates every day at 8 a.m., and most shows run through 10 p.m. or later. Adult admission is $15 per day, but multi-day packages and after-5 p.m. specials are available. If you are planning a weekend stay and prefer the rides to the exhibits, consider the Midway Magic Pass, which includes 24 weekend ride passes for $25. Whether you come for one night or 2 weeks, you’re guaranteed some laid back easiness at The Big E.
