Talladega Days and Nights

It’s the most remote spot of all of the NASCAR venues. The wildest two weekends of the nearly 10 month NASCAR season can be summed up in one word. “Dega!” It has often been compared to Mardigras, only instead of New Orleans, it takes place on thousands of uninhabited acres in central Alabama. No bull, you should bring some Mardi-gras style beads. It may not be the best scenery in the world, but you will see more than you could ever want. This is one to leave the women and children you love, and also the faint of heart at home.

Girls of the SEC

Most sports websites have at some point ranked the SEC schools in terms of hot girls, well now it is my turn.  I feel that my list will be much more precise due in a large part to the 8 years of research I have poured into this article.  My five years at UGA, followed up by three in Atlanta, and now 6 months in Nashville at Vanderbilt puts me in a unique position to really give an accurate portrayal.

Let's Wear a Purple Pimp Suit to an LSU Game!

If you have ever been to a LSU football game, in Baton Rouge or otherwise, you might see a recurring outfit either in the stadium or while tailgating.  I am talking about the purple pimp suits that these people wear.  What the heck is up with that?  I mean, your colors are already the super tough purple and yellow, so why go and make yourself look even more foolish by wearing a purple pimp

Hampton Inn

Hampton Inn
600 Harper Lee Drive
Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 12' 41.724" N, 87° 31' 22.4868" W

Hampton Inn University is THE place to stay on football weekends but usually requires you to stay both Fri. and Sat. nights.

Red Shed

509 13th Ave
Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 12' 39.474" N, 87° 33' 16.3152" W

This bar is a newcomer to the Strip scene.  Known for its toughness on IDs (i.e., if you have a fake, don’t even try to get in), The Red Shed is a cool little spot that sits directly behind Eagens (and if you don’t know where Eagen’s is, it’s cool – no one else does either).  If you are in the mood to kick it outside, this bar offers outside seating.

Innisfree

Innisfreepub
521 Greensboro Ave
Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 12' 34.596" N, 87° 34' 5.304" W

If you are wanting a more low-key night, where the “mature” older crowd hangs, then this is the bar for you.  But arrive to this bar early, because if you fail to heed this warning, you will be standing up for quite some time.  This bar is too small for its population, hence why it will be getting a nice upgrade in the near future.  Aside from offering a great “Irish car bomb” shot, this the place to go if you desire to hear some dude whaling on an acoustic, singing “that” playlist (which inevitably includes some Eric Clapton, Janis Joplin, and Jack Johnson).   Checkou

The Legacy

The Legacy
1215 University Blvd
Tuscaloosa, AL

Bear Trap

There is a restaurant on top of it on the roof that has great food and a 102 inch projection TV. It is awesome to be able to sit outside on the roof and watch over the strip. The bar scene is great here too. As of fall 2008, this has definitely become one of the main places to go out in T-Town. It will be packed with students every night of the weekend. Here is a link to the University’s paper write-up:

Gallette’s

1021 University Blvd
Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 12' 34.668" N, 87° 32' 48.1884" W

What can one say about Gallettes, other than it is perhaps the most glorious
establishment of all time.

The is no grand façade to greet you when you arrive

Jupiter Bar and Grill

Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 12' 37.5732" N, 87° 33' 4.0392" W

The Houndstooth

Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 12' 37.4976" N, 87° 33' 3.6468" W

Houndstooth has been named one of the best sports bars in America. They have tons of TVs, great food and an array of beers. If you get tired of spitting game then grab a few buddies and enjoy all the bar sports you could want with darts and pool tables on either side of the huge wrap around bar.

Bar Scene Overview

Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 12' 22.7052" N, 87° 31' 38.082" W

If you are an Alabama fan, who loves having an adult beverage (or five) after watching the Crimson Tide destroy an SEC West opponent at Bryant Denny Stadium (hereinafter “BDS”), or just a fan of good times, then the Tuscaloosa bar scene is the place for you.  With two distinct night-life areas, both the Strip and Downtown Tuscaloosa provide a plethora of venues for you to get your party on.  Some of these venues are low-key, while others will leave you with a need for Goody’s headache powder and a tall glass of water the next day.

Fraternity Parties

Fraternity Ln
Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 12' 35.5752" N, 87° 32' 19.9608" W

These are some of the biggest and wildest parties in the South East. There is an Old Row and a New Row, both of which are home to parties with hundreds of students almost every weekend. The houses are all really large and have rooms for bands inside and out. One thing that is different here is you are allowed to bring in beer to the houses which ensures the parties will be crazy.

Buffalo Phil’s Wings

1149 University Blvd
Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 12' 35.9172" N, 87° 32' 55.1508" W

Bear Trap

1137 University Blvd
Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 12' 35.8092" N, 87° 32' 54.564" W

There is a restaurant on top of it on the roof that has great food and a 102-inch projection TV. It is awesome to be able to sit outside on the roof and watch over the strip. Here is a link to a write-up in the University’s paper, Crimson White.

Mugshots

511 Greensboro Ave
Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 12' 34.9236" N, 87° 34' 5.43" W

The best burgers in T-Town. Mugshots is a huge restaurant and bar that is famous for their half-pound burgers served on a sourdough bun. The two-story restaurant is located in Downtown and is a great place to go. It will definitely be packed on any home game weekend. On Wednesday night they have karaoke and $0.25 pitchers of beer.

Hokkaido

528 15th St E
Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 11' 51.1296" N, 87° 31' 46.2396" W

Very similar to Shogun where they cook the food right in front of you. Checkout: Hokkaido.

Ste 430, 1800 McFarland Blvd E
Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 11' 37.644" N, 87° 31' 36.9984" W

Iguana Grill is a great new Tex-Mex restaurant in Tuscaloosa. The interior has a very unique design with walls that look like they are covered in crackled glass and bright colors throughout. They have great chips and salsa to start the meal off and all of the other food is delicious too.

Dreamland Bar-B-Que

5535 15th Ave E
Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 9' 26.5824" N, 87° 31' 0.6672" W

Dreamland is by far the most famous place to eat in Tuscaloosa. It was started in 1958 and ships their famous southern Ribs all over the country. The restaurant has a very casual, deep-south feel and you will leave with a very full stomach. Top off your meal with some homemade cobbler or some Georgia Pecan Pie.

Hotel Capstone

Hotel Capstone
320 W. Bryant Drive
Tuscaloosa, AL
United States
33° 12' 21.1284" N, 87° 32' 23.4636" W

Hotel Capstone is on campus probably about a mile from the stadium and its actually right across the street from the practice field.

Tailgating on the Quad

One of the coolest things to do while visiting Bama is to tailgate on the Quad. Every game day there will be thousands of tailgates set-up and enough alcohol to flood the town. The atmosphere is classy with flat screen TV’s and elaborate tailgates everywhere you look.

Alabama Football Game

Last year was Alabama’s rise back to being a prominent team on a national level. They have recently expanded Bryant Denny stadium and made a gorgeous entrance on the campus side. Going to a game is an awesome experience and you will see college football tradition at its finest. The band will play “Sweet Home Alabama” and the crowd will go nuts.

Birmingham Crawfish Boil

This is one of the biggest events in the South and draws college students from all the surrounding areas. Students from Auburn and Alabama frequent the event as something to do when school lets out. It is fun for students not only because of the delicious crawfish, but the huge party that goes on all day. Some of the biggest bands in the country even come to entertain the screaming crowd.

Over one quarter of undergraduates at Alabama are now members of a social Greek letter organization.

The number of Greek men has more than doubled since 2002 to almost 2,500 for the fall of 2008 with fifteen fraternities now recording memberships of more than one hundred.
